Soffit Out, Light In: Susan's South Tampa Kitchen Update
A Brighter, More Open South Tampa Kitchen
Subheader: Removing an oversized dog-leg soffit and replacing it with five decorative pendant lights — opening up the space, lifting the ceiling line, and giving the kitchen a fresh, modern feel.
Before the project
When Susan first reached out, she had a clear vision for her South Tampa kitchen. A large dog-leg soffit hung down from her roughly 13-foot ceiling and followed the shape of her island, making the entire kitchen feel heavier and more closed off than she wanted. Her goal was simple: open the space up, brighten it, and bring in some modern character with new decorative pendant lighting over the island.
Susan originally found us through Angi, then spent time researching us through our website and Google reviews before reaching out. After a little phone tag early on, we connected, talked through her ideas, and got her on the calendar. From the first conversation, communication was easy and expectations were clear — exactly how a project should start.
Before any demo began, we met Susan at her home, walked through the kitchen together, and introduced her to our tradesman Matt, who would be leading the majority of the work. With the scope confirmed and an estimate she was happy with, we scheduled the project for the first opening in our calendar about two weeks later. From our very first conversation, it was clear that keeping this project organized, low-stress, and easy on the family wasn’t just a nice-to-have — it was the priority. We took the time to listen, plan thoughtfully, and coordinate the work in a way that gave Jennifer flexibility and peace of mind. Communication was open, expectations were clear, and our team was aligned on making the project feel as seamless as possible from start to finish.
Before any work began, we walked through the kitchen with Jennifer, confirmed the island modification details, and set her up with our tradesman Matt to pick out the perfect quartz slab at Acme Stone in Tampa.
Our Work
Scope Of Work
1. Soffit Demolition & Removal
We carefully demolished and removed the entire dog-leg soffit structure above the kitchen island. The surrounding area was protected throughout to keep dust and debris contained and the rest of the home clean.
2. Drywall Repair & Blending
After the soffit was removed, we repaired and blended the surrounding drywall to create one clean, flat ceiling. Every seam was taped, mudded, sanded, and prepped for paint so the transition looked seamless.
3. Electrical Wiring & Switching
Our licensed electrician installed new wiring and switching for the five decorative pendant lights, ensuring everything was up to code and properly controlled from a convenient switch location.
4. Pendant Light Installation
We installed the five new decorative pendants over the island, spacing them evenly and adjusting heights for a balanced, intentional look that matches the scale of the room.
5. Final Detailing & Cleanup
We touched up paint, double-checked every fixture and surface, and cleaned the workspace thoroughly — leaving the kitchen brighter, taller, and ready to enjoy.
After Our Work
When the work was done, Susan’s kitchen felt like a completely different room. Removing the dog-leg soffit gave the space its full 13-foot ceiling back, and the difference was immediate — the kitchen looked taller, felt brighter, and had a sense of openness that the old soffit had been hiding for years.
The five new decorative pendants brought everything together. Evenly spaced above the island, they added warmth, texture, and a clear focal point without weighing the room down the way the soffit did. The lighting feels intentional now, and the whole kitchen reads as more modern, more open, and more in line with the rest of Susan’s home.
Beyond the finished look, the project came together exactly the way it should — clear communication from start to finish, clean workmanship from Matt and our licensed electrician, and a finished space Susan was genuinely excited about. It’s the kind of project that proves how much of a difference one focused update can make, and we’re really glad Susan trusted us with her kitchen. The quartz slab she selected at Acme Stone fit the space beautifully, with consistent veining and a polished finish that made the whole kitchen feel brighter and more open. Every seam was clean, every edge was crisp, and the transition from the modified island to the surrounding countertops looked seamless.
It’s a project we’re really proud of — not just for the craftsmanship, but for how well the finished result matched the vision Jennifer had when she first reached out. From our very first conversation, it was clear that keeping this project organized, low-stress, and easy on the family wasn’t just a nice-to-have — it was the priority. Frequently Asked Questions
Answers From a Tampa Bay Contractor You Can Trust
Years of remodels, repairs, decks, and docks taught us one thing: homeowners deserve clear answers before any work begins. If your question isn't here, give us a call and we'll walk you through it.
What kind of projects do you take on?
Big or small — we handle kitchen and bathroom remodels, countertop installations, custom decks, docks, trim and finish carpentry, general home repairs, and a wide range of handyman services across the Tampa Bay Area. If it's part of your home and it needs to be built, fixed, or upgraded, we've likely handled one like it before.
Where do you work?
We serve homeowners throughout the Tampa Bay Area, including Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and surrounding communities. Being local means faster scheduling, quicker site visits, and easier follow-ups when something needs a second look.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes — free, no-pressure, no-obligation estimates on every project. We'll come out, look at the work, ask the right questions, and give you an honest price in writing. If anything changes once we're underway, we tell you before we touch it.
How much will my project cost?
Pricing depends on the scope, materials, and finishes you choose — a countertop swap and a full kitchen remodel are very different projects. What doesn't change is our pricing philosophy: fair prices for quality work, with clear estimates and no hidden surprises.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — we're fully insured, and we pull permits with the local municipality whenever a project requires one. We're happy to share insurance documentation before any project begins so you have complete peace of mind.
Do you offer a warranty on your work?
Absolutely — we stand behind every project with one of the best warranties in the Tampa Bay Area. If something isn't right, we make it right. Quality and accountability are part of how we do business.
Do you take on small jobs, or only big projects?
Both. A loose railing, a dripping faucet, a single trim board — those are real problems, and we'll fix them properly. We treat a one-hour repair with the same care as a full remodel.
How quickly can you start?
For most repairs, within a few days. Larger remodels and custom projects get scheduled out further depending on the season and material lead times. When you request a quote, we'll give you a realistic timeline — not a promise we can't keep.
What's the best way to get on the schedule?
Request a free quote through the form on our site or give us a call directly. Either way, you'll talk to a real person who knows the work — not a call center.
